It's naptime, and I am lying on the couch listening to the wind blow around the house. Since living here, I've learned that wind sounds different when it's blowing through different things. It whistles around houses- this high pitched wintry tone sometimes wakes me up at night. It roars through oaks and maples behind my house, knocking off newly sprung leaves and old branches that fly horizontally past my windows; long thin twigs flying past me, heading who to knows where and coming from the approximately the same place. It flies trough pines trees almost silently, only making a noise as it passes out of them.
My favorite sound is the wind rushing through a bamboo grove. We have a lot bamboo here. People like it, and often use for privacy hedges and for landscape decoration, but sometimes dont realize that bamboo is the gift that keeps on giving- in an neighborly sort of fashion if you catch my drift. Duke Gardens has a spacious, shady, beautiful, calming bamboo grove, and when the wind ran thought that yesterday, the 3 of us stopped to watch. It's a scratchy sound, but relaxing. The leaves flow in one direction and then the next, dark green, followed by the silvery green underneath as the leaves fly back in the opposite direction. Windy days are always good days for me. They dont have to bring good news, or result in good behavior or completed housework. But the wind is always kind of cleansing for me. The sky is a little bluer and the day more cheerful and calming.
